There's not a whole lot of money in journalism... but then, people don't generally go into that profession for the money. Reporters make around $50,000 per year, depending on where you live. At entry level, though, reporters make around $30,000 to $35,000 on average, which is very low. If you're an editor or a designer for a newspaper, you'll make more, but still not a lot. Managing editors, for example, make around $75,000 per year, which is very respectable.

PR is a similar story. $40,000 per year at entry level, but after many years of working, you can get to $80,000 to $90,000 per year. Big bucks await you at the PR executive level with upwards of $150,000 per year.

This field and those of the majors that you mention are so crowded that online graduates will be at distinct disadvantage when they compete with the graduates of traditional universities for the very few available positions.

May I politely suggest that you reconsider your career goals and start by looking at employment opportunities for new graduates in various fields.

I graduated from college five and a half years ago with a degree in Communications, focus in PR. It took me about a year of working two part-time jobs to come across my current employer, a national non-profit organization. I've been there now 4.5 years and I enjoy what I do. Is it stressful? Sure, sometimes. But what job isn't? Am I financially stable? Yes, but the money isn't the motivating factor. It also took a few years to get to this point. When I took my original position with the organization it was at a low salary, but I looked at it as an opportunity to get my foot in the door at a respected organization I wanted to be a part of. I've since been promoted three times and have gained valuable experience in the public relations field.

My advise- if you enjoy your classes stick with your major. Every major company in the world has a marketing/communications department. So if your passion is finance, pharma, non-profit, etc, chances are you'll find a job with a company that shares your interests.

Best of luck.
